The ash and lava flows from past eruptions have enriched the Bay of Naples region with essential minerals, making it ideal for agriculture.

These minerals include iron, magnesium, potassium, calcium, phosphorus, sulfur, and silica.

​

Feldspar (an aluminosilicate) has an abundance of minerals such as iron, magnesium, and potassium. 

 

Basalt makes up the majority of volcanic soil and these rocks have high quantities of iron, phosphorus and calcium which are easily weathered.

 

Many fertilizers contain minerals such as the ones that are naturally weathered into the soil from deposits of volcanic eruptions. 

Sorrento's identity is deeply connected to the sea. The town's history is filled with stories of sailors, fishermen and the mythical sirens said to inhabit the bay.

Marina Grande remains a working fishing port today and retains its strong ties to maritime culture.

The geology and topography of the Bay of Naples has led to agricultural terracing, fishing and coastal tourism.

Proximity to the sea has made Sorrento a hub for trade and fishing, but the steep cliffs lining the coast make accessibility limited. ​

Terracing  is a tradition that continues today, which has helped cultivate agriculture on steep slopes and reduce erosion.

Primary agricultural crops include: olives, citrus (especially lemons), and grapes (for wine).

In Ancient times, Roman aristocrats built villas in the Bay of Naples region. To this day, Sorrento is still a resort town and luxury destination.
