While studying abroad in Sorrento, I worked on a project where I needed to collaborate and share research/resources with other classmates working on separate, but related projects. I took initiative to establish communication and information sharing between us. In addition, I listed which research locations overlapped for all three of our projects and helped to coordinate a time to visit those locations together.  As a result, all three of us were able to complete out individual projects on time with help and support from each other. 

While studying abroad in Italy, I discussed the challenges of balancing increasing tourism with environmental preservation in Sorrento. I needed to identify potential solutions that considered economic, social and environmental concerns. I researched current examples of environmental protection in the area to learn about the benefits and drawbacks of different conservation methods. My conclusions helped the class better understand the challenges that come with environmental protection in such a densely populated area. 

While living in Sorrento, I faced many cultural differences and a language barrier. I needed to adapt in order to communicate in another language and feel comfortable living in a new environment. I stayed flexible by learning as many Italian phrases as I could and approaching new situations with an open mind and a willingness to learn. I not only succeeded academically, but I also gained more self-confidence in adapting to new and unfamiliar situations.

For my final project in Sorrento, I was tasked with conducting a research project on the geology of the Bay of Naples. I wanted my project to be viewer friendly and both educational and interactive. ​In order to accomplish this I collected multiple different rocks throughout my time in Italy. I brought these rocks to class and discussed them along with my research so my classmates could better visualize the area's geology.  I think the rocks I collected helped to engage my classmates in my research and establish a stronger connection between them and the rocks beneath their feet.
