Final Reflection
Studying abroad in Sorrento, Italy during the summer of 2025 was a transformative experience that reshaped how I understand culture, community, and my own sense of purpose. Rather than simply adding international travel to my resume, the experience challenged me intellectually and personally. My international experiences required me to reflect on my worldview, my values, and the kind of impact I hope to make after graduation.
As an International Scholar, I learned that global engagement is not passive; it demands curiosity, kindness, and intention. Spending time in Sorrento emphasized that studying abroad is not just about absorbing another culture, but about examining one’s own assumptions in the process. I became more aware of political and economic interdependence, especially in a place like Sorrento, where tourism sustains much of the local economy. I began to think more critically and skeptically about simplified narratives, recognizing that global challenges are complex and interconnected. The perspective I developed during my time in Sorrento continues to influence how I think today. Through attending the international events at UF, I further strengthened my ability to analyze issues through a multicultural lens.
Personally, studying abroad strengthened my independence and resilience. Navigating transportation systems, communicating in Italian, and adjusting to unfamiliar academic expectations required initiative and adaptability. While my Italian language skills were developing, I often had to step outside my comfort zone to communicate effectively. Making mistakes in another language was initially uncomfortable, but I learned to view those moments as opportunities for growth. I developed a greater tolerance for ambiguity and an increased capacity to learn from my mistakes. This shift in mindset has made me more confident in new situations and more willing to take risks.
One of the challenges I encountered through my international experiences was managing uncertainty. Whether it involved logistical miscommunications or cultural misunderstandings, I quickly realized that not everything would unfold according to plan. I took risks by initiating conversations with locals, traveling independently on weekends, and participating in discussions even when I was unsure of myself. These experiences strengthened my confidence and reinforced my belief that growth often requires discomfort. They also improved my day-to-day problem-solving skills, as I had to navigate real-life challenges without relying on familiar support systems.
My experience abroad also revealed my strengths. I discovered that I am adaptable and observant, able to read social cues and adjust accordingly. Group projects and intercultural discussions demonstrated my ability to listen carefully and empathize with perspectives different from my own. I found that I thrive in diverse environments where collaboration across cultures is necessary. These moments affirmed my interest in working in spaces that value intercultural competence and global awareness.
Through ISP and my time studying abroad, my desire for diverse friendships and social networks grew significantly. Building relationships with peers from different backgrounds expanded my understanding of identity and perspective. Through attending International Night at UF, I was able to expanded my ideas surrounding the importance of safe cultural spaces, self-expression, and belonging. Overall, the event helped me better appreciate the diversity within the UF community and the importance of creating environments where everyone feels they belong. Although it was challenging at first to step outside my comfort zone to engage with unfamiliar topics, in the end, I developed greater confidence and a stronger sense of curiosity.
Academically and professionally, my UF and ISP global learning experiences have sharpened my future aspirations. Exposure to a different educational and organizational culture made me more aware of global opportunities and strengthened my openness to pursuing them. I am now more inclined to seek careers that involve international collaboration or address global issues. The intercultural competencies I developed such as communication across differences, adaptability, critical thinking, and initiative, will directly aid me in obtaining a job after graduation. Thanks to my experiences I now have a greater willingness to take on roles that are unfamiliar because I have seen firsthand how capability grows through challenge.
Ultimately, my summer in Sorrento and my experiences through the International Scholars Program did not just expand my worldview, but also refined my sense of direction. Through my experiences, I have grown in independence, empathy, flexibility, and critical awareness. I learned that global engagement is both a privilege and a responsibility. As I move toward post-graduation life, I carry with me not only intercultural skills, but also a deeper understanding of who I am and how I want to move through the world.
